January 20 is the Day of Remembrance for the Defenders of Donetsk Airport. The battle for it lasted eight months, from May 26, 2014, to January 23, 2015 – during the initial phase of Russia’s war against Ukraine that started in February 2014. The Donetsk airport was protected by Ukrainian heroes who became known as “Cyborgs.” Its defence is filled with thousands of stories of courage. On January 20, Ukraine honors the memory of the soldiers who heroically defended Donetsk airport in 2014-2015. This battle lasted 242 days and became one of the fiercest and most symbolic events of the Russia-Ukraine war. The airport was defended by people who were stronger than concrete. They became known as "cyborgs". At least 97 Ukrainian defenders were killed in the battles for Donetsk Airport, and three remain missing.
